Greetings from PALS!

Registration is open for the DUAL Theory to Practice(T2P) Lecture. Based on the feedback from the outstation Partner Institutes to engage the students travelling all the way from outside Chennai, PALS for the very first time has scheduled to conduct two Theory to Practice Lecture sessions in the forenoon and in the afternoon.

These back to back T2P Lectures will happen in Hybrid mode (Physical @IITM and live streamed) on February 28th, 2023, between 10.00AM – 5.00PM.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE ARE TWO REGISTRATION LINKS FOR THIS EVENT

Details are as below.

THEORY TO PRACTICE SESSION 1 – FORENOON – 10.30 AM – 12.30 PM

Topic

MACHINE LEARNING INSPIRED SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND ACCELERATED OPTIMAL DESIGNS by Prof. PALANIAPPAN RAMU, Associate Professor, Dept. Engineering Design and the Industry Counterpart Mr. VINAY RAMANATH, Principal Expert R&D at Siemens Technology

Profile of the Speakers

Prof. Palaniappan Ramu is a faculty at the Dept. Engineering Design, IIT Madras. He works on applying statistics and probability for design. He has authored several journal and conference papers and patents. He is a review editor in the Journal of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization.

Mr. Vinay Ramanath, presently in the role of principal key expert at Siemens Corporate Research and Technology is working on simulation and digital twin technologies. He has a deeper passion for optimization and its intersection with machine learning, NLP, digital twins and sustainability.

Abstract

Conventionally new product development has focused on factors such as cost, performance, and reliability among others. However, with the environmental concerns, it is imperative to weigh designs from a sustainability perspective. This talk will focus on developing and implementing a learning/data driven approach that accounts for sustainability during design to enable multi criteria decision making.

The second part of the talk will discuss the need to import and leverage the knowledge of computer simulations over the years to accelerate current design cycles using a ML technique called Transfer learning. Both parts will discuss the need, methods developed and implementation to real-life problems.

Target Audience:

15  participants from Partner Institute (faculty and students) of any discipline can register to attend the event physically at the IITM Campus

No restriction on the number of participants watching online.

Topic

3D PRINTING IN BUILDING STRUCTURES by DR.MANU SANTHANAM, Professor, Dept. of Civil Engineering and the Industry Counterpart.

Profile of the Speaker

Dr. Manu Santhanam is a professor in the Building Technology of Construction Management division and currently, the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras. He teaches undergraduate and graduate-level courses mainly in the areas of construction materials, concrete technology, non-destructive testing and characterization of construction materials. His research domains cover cement chemistry and multi-scale characterization of concrete including non-destructive testing, assessment of deterioration mechanisms in concrete and masonry structures, 3D printing of concrete structures, concrete durability and use of supplementary cementing materials.

Abstract

Session is about the potential for 3D printing in the concrete construction industry. It touches upon the challenges of materials and instrumentation for accomplishing the printing of large-scale structural elements. It also describes the systematic research methodology followed at IIT Madras in association with a startup - M/s Tvasta Manufacturing Solutions - that led to the creation of India's first live-able 3D printed house.

Target Audience:
