Topic: CONTRIBUTION OF NANOMATERIALS TO BEYOND LI-BASED BATTERIES AND  HYDROGEN ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES

Brief Introduction of the topic:

A gradual shift from the consumption of conventional hydrocarbon fuels to an energy saving, environment friendly renewable energy sources is the need of the hour mainly because of the increase of CO2 emissions thereby the global warming.

Presently, many of the electric vehicles are powered by LIBs; leads to depletion of Li source and issues of recycling of batteries which have faded. So, a new method which can increase the cyclic stability of LIBs without opening the cell would be useful. The depletion of Li leads to the need for alternative energy technologies to develop beyond Li-based batteries.

Hydrogen energy technology needs a) production of hydrogen, b) Hydrogen storage and c) hydrogen fuel cell.

Hydrogen production by the direct electrolysis of seawater rather than with freshwater will reduce the heavy strain on vital water resources but also make the use of plentiful resource available throughout the earth. Hydrogen storage is the backbone of the hydrogen economy. Hence solid-state storage of hydrogen will be useful for energy applications like fuel cells which in turn are utilized to produce electricity with environment friendly by-products for transportation application. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are more suitable and promising technology in this aspect due to the abundant hydrogen source and zero emission of toxic pollutants. Thus production and storage of hydrogen will benefit those industries working on fuel cell hydrogen cars which represent a unique share of the transportation market; Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs).

The last few years have witnessed the development of novel nanocomposites, some of them promise exciting energy related applications. Thus, we need to develop both beyond Li-based batteries technologies and green hydrogen fuel cells simultaneously for electric vehicles from the outstanding properties of nanomaterials.
